Goals.

So, I'm entirely opposed to New Years resolutions. Why?

Because it's cliche. And I'm just silly that way.

Ironically, though, the lesson my young women received the week before New Year's was on goal setting. It was a great lesson and got me all fired up to make a goal and really follow through with it. I was so excited about it that I didn't realize it was just a couple days before the holiday! BAH! I had told Kirby about the lesson, and he requested that I summarize it for our Family Home Evening.

So we made some goals. And they so happened to fall right around New Years. Don't judge. :)

That being said, we now have 9 copies of our goals, ways to achieve the goals, and rewards posted strategically all over our apartment. I'm looking at one right now above our computers.

There's another on the bathroom mirror.

Above the kitchen sink.

There are a couple strategically hung from the ceiling where we walk often. As in, hanging down so they barely brush our heads.

etc.
etc.
etc.

One of my goals (which I was hesitant to make) involved weight loss. Why was I hesitant?

Because it's cliche. :)

But also--I've never tried to lose weight before. I have had goals regarding fitness and such, but never any that involved a target weight. So I was scared. Scared that I will fail because I don't know how!

My goal is to get down to how much I weighed in high school (160, for anyone who is wondering...).

Side note: I find it so ironic how much my body image changes. In high school I was happy with my body, but recognized that I weighed more than other girls. I am tall. I am curvy. Deep down I wished I weighed a bit less, but I was athletic and felt good physically, so I never cared enough to take action. Now, looking back, I'm thinking--Was I crazy!? I LOOKED GOOD! :) I wonder if twenty years from now I will be thinking the same thing about my body now. Probably. And that is one thing that helps me keep my body image in check.

Have I made progress towards my goal? No. Not really. My mini goals to help me achieve my target weight involve me walking briskly at least 1/2 an hour each day, and doing pilates at least 3 times a week. Shortly after making our goals, Kirby got a cold, and then I got a cold... and our motivation and drive was shot. But last week I walked Monday-Thursday (Friday was nasty weather wise, so my mom and I opted out) and did Pilates three times! And this week I walked yesterday and today, and I did Pilates yesterday. SO... I'm back on track! I can already tell a difference in the way my body feels and looks, but I haven't seen any significant weight loss. I keep telling myself that it takes time, but I get so impatient! I'm sure this is why so many people's weight loss goals fail! We all want instant results!

That being said, a friend of mine posted a status on Facebook asking for suggestions regarding weight loss, and a lot of the girls that responded said that exercise wasn't enough. That the only way to really lose weight was by cutting calories.

So here's my question.
What do you think??? What has worked for you???

You know what the funny thing is? The point of this post was in no way to discuss my weight loss goal. But there you have it. I'm calling out for your help!

The actual point of my post was to tell you of a NEW goal I'm making as of today. I am going to take at least one picture every day. I want to stretch myself. I love taking pictures of Emily (obviously), so I'm going to try and photograph other stuff.

Pictures of our apartment.

Little details.

Outside stuff.

It should be fun. I'm going to try to post one each day!

Day 1 starts tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Portion control and NOT denying myself treats, just limiting them. Also, finding every and any excuse to move. Because I would far rather be playing with Lightroom, Photoshop, or Illustrator :)

So we are working on the same thing in our family! I have some post-baby weight to work on and Tom, well, has some post-baby weight to work on, too! hahaha...pregnancy does that to ya. But, keep in mind that you are still recovering from pregnancy and be sure to give your body realistic expectations. Those babies really jumble things around inside and honestly, I didn't feel like I was back to my normal size (hips not spread anymore) and weight until Caleb was 18 months! And then I got pregnant again. :)

But, I definitely echo Kristin's advice...don't deny yourself those little indulges. Or else you may find yourself gorging on them in day 6. And one thing that worked wonders for me was joining a gym that has child care. I LOVED the gym I used to go to in Dallas because the child care was fabulous and I had two hours a day to workout all to myself. Good luck on your goals!!!

lol - so here's my input. i never tried to loose weight, but i did using this method (15 lbs if you're wondering):

- don't eat within two hours of going to bed
- exercise regularly
- eat healthier foods more in proportion

that's it! granted it took a whole year, but i think it's a healthy amount of time and a healthy way of doing it. as far as loosing weight after having a bebe, no clue lol. this stuff is just for generals. and of course, every body is different and requires different things :) good luck!

The healthiest I've been after high school was at the end of last summer. This is what I did:

*No soda...maybe super occasionally, but that's it!
*Candy only on weekends. It's a weakness of mine.
*Smaller portions of food and no seconds at dinner, I found I really didn't need it.
*Ran 2 miles everyday. I think this is what helped the most because it kept me thinking about a healthy/active lifestyle.

I just have to say that you are amazing. I have a ROTTEN body image, and am so inspired by your attitude about the way you look. It makes you beautiful on the inside and outside! I am going to try, still, to be more like you!

I am going to try to implement maybe a couple things my friends suggested...we can help each other! Let's check-up on how each other's goals are coming along!

I have occasionally used sparkpeople.com--it's an online food journal, and you tell it how much you weigh, how much you want to lose, and how quickly, and it'll tell you how many calories you should be eating and burning everyday. I'll be honest, it's kind of annoying to have to enter every single food you eat (especially when it's something homemade that you can't just search and the calories will pop right up) but I think it's really good to at least get an idea of how many calories you're currently eating. I've been shocked at how quickly they'll add up . . . I'll think I'm eating a normal 1600 or 1800 or so calories a day and find out it's closer to like 2500 . . . or more . . . so I wouldn't use it long-term, but it's a great way to at least see where you are right now and what needs to change.

Ok so you have tons of advices. But I just had to confess that I have always been jealouse of your tall curvey atheltic body. Oh how you are so pretty.

Confession number two I had never tried to lose weight until i had Russell. And we had an amazing Enrichment on weight controll and excrise. I learned to watch what I eat which was what I need the most. I loved to get out and go running. But I learned I could eat what ever I want If I just ate less of it. Before you knew it I way lessed than I thought I would. But I also think it was because I nursed Russell for so long.

Good luck with your goals. Now where not sick we need to have you over.

How fun! I didn't even bother listing "get in shape" as one of my goals this year, so you are my hero! I always do better when I have a workout buddy, even if it's just to go to a pilates class once a week. Kristin and I used to go to the pilates classes at BYU together and it was way more fun than going alone!

Im a calorie counter! That helps me realize what needless things i'm eating if i have to write them down. That and substitute chocolate for dinner (hehe, alright not the best advice!).
